The South American Connection: Carlos Martinez

April 2000

Carlos A. Martinez (aardvak_y2k@yahoo.com) of Cordoba, Argentina has sent us photos of his newly competed PakYak! Carlos is the first person outside of the United States to build one, although the mailing list has a lot of international subscribers.

Here are the photos he made of the skinning and launching:

With the frame complete, wife Amalia sews up the skin at an outdoor sewing station.

Frame and skin details:

Inserting the frame in the skin, then launching under the watchful eye of daughter Lucia.

Afloat in the Embalse de Rio Tercero! Son Emilio stands by in the inflatable while Carlos and Amalia give it a try.

Footnotes: Carlos weighs about 76 kg (167 lbs.). During the maiden voyage the steel cable behind him loosened up. You can see a slight flexing near the waterline in the middle picture above. He reports the hardest part of the project was sewing through three layers of cloth/cordura.
