One final note on the construction of the reel. Apparently the ratchet machanism varied. Here is an excerpt from a memo dated June 27. 1945:

  1. Subject reel was originally manufactured by Comet Model Airplane & Supply Company of Chicago, and incorporated a ratchet with rectangular slide. Spalding Company of Chicopee, Massachusetts, the more recent manufacturer, used a three-roller ratchet which which proved superior to the slide type.
  2. When the Army ordered subject device an effort was made to reduce the price of the reels, and a pin type ratchet was substituted for the roller type. The pin type ratchet has not proven satisfactory.
