- Subject reel was originally manufactured by Comet Model Airplane
& Supply Company of Chicago, and incorporated a ratchet with
rectangular slide. Spalding Company of Chicopee, Massachusetts, the
more recent manufacturer, used a three-roller ratchet which which proved
superior to the slide type.
 - When the Army ordered subject device an effort was made to
reduce the price of the reels, and a pin type ratchet was substituted
for the roller type. The pin type ratchet has not proven satisfactory.
