Wing paddles (and wing paddlers) do seem to win races.

If anyone has watched that 1991 Scientific American Frontiers TV segment
where Greg Barton paddles 2 baidarkas vs an olympic training K1 and a
(Kevlar) Seda Glider, he was using a wing paddle. (8.1 knots in the
baidarka, at a steady, controlled by heart rate and not all-out pace).
The wing paddle seems to help allow him to get the entire range of swing
of his massive torso into the full power of his stroke.
