Orientation of the fiber - flat or vertical - as already said several
times also dramatically affects stiffness.
As a general suggestion, I would add that slightly rounding all sharp
edges with sandpaper strongly reduces the chance of any piece of wood to
crack and splinter under stress following grain orientation.
