Knowing only a little about design, I would have thought adding beam would
initially stabilize (and slow) the boat while widening the gunwales would add
reserve stability. In other words, the boat would remain rather fast, but
would be just as tender as before until it fell over on its side. Then,
burying more boat into the water, it would stiffen considerably. Also, the
increased slope to the sides (increased bouyancy) should turn beam waves much
better than a straighter side just as it does on a dory. Dories are very
tender too until they either have ballast in them (originally fish) or they
drop onto their sides. They being narrow bottomed, like your kayak design,
remain easy to row, however, though their high ends can catch a lot of wind.
As I have tried to draw to your plan the largest cross section of a kayak, it
does get rather "V'ed." I suppose yours is too. Right? Hmmmmm. of course I
was drawing mine wider than you (24").
Anyway, thanks for the help. You are the only one who has responded.

Yeah, I think flare has a lot more to do with the stability than does width
per se. Since our discussion, I completed and tested Raven. I can now hang
her on her gunwale and spin her; previously, I couldn't take my eyes off the
water. This is the second hull I have done this too, the first being Orca,
with same result. And Heron, which was designed from the beginning with the
additional secondary flare, I have actually dosed off while sitting in the
reeds at Spencer Island in the late afternoon summer sun. I think you could
fish all day in that boat.
