Ya know, we build airplanes in the daytime around here. Got a bunch of
Harley-Davidson types in that factory with the hairy arms, tee shirts, and
torn jeans. Ya know that 747 you ride around in? Yep, they's the ones what
build it.

And they're good. Better than good. They're GREAT. The stuff they can do
with aluminum is awesome to watch. But they tend to be a hard boiled bunch,
tend to be pretty down on anything that smacks of sissy stuff. So when we
started mandating safety glasses and ear plugs, those who could still hear
anything pretended not to.

It took awhile. But the process got speeded up a bunch when one of those
mechanics took a pair of safety glasses home for his kid who was working in
construction. A week later, a nail gun got dropped. Drove a 12 penny nail
straight through the left lens of those safety glasses. It stopped about a
half inch before hitting his eye. They took a picture, and pretty soon it
went all around the factory -- in less than a day.

It ain't perfect around there now, but it is a lot better. The statistics
are looking better too. For some real success stories on industrial safety,
look at Alcoa -- they really got the message through. I know for myself I
have been a whole lot less macho and more careful in my kayak shop. Hope you
all are too!
