When doing woodworking of any type I essentially have a two tier system: I
ALWAYS wear eye protection whether using hand or power tools, flying
splinters, wood shattering, or tool failure can happen at any time; when
using power tools (portable or stationary) I also use ear protection
(usually canal caps or ear muffs) and lung protection (99% capture
disposable paper). If I had the ideal shop it would include a well designed
dust capture system... working in my garage I use the shop vac and try to
get to the sawdust before it gets loose. When doing finishing work or using
epoxy I use glasses and always wear latex gloves to lessen exposure and
splash hazards. I'd recommend that folks find out as much as they can about
the products they're using (get Material Safety Data Sheets -MSDS- from the
manufacturer if possible) and still proceed with caution and neatness. Some
coatings that can be used in skin and frame construction can be very toxic,
the fumes can be absorbed through the skin and eyes, and should be treated
with respect.
