HEEE HEE HEEEEEEE HEEEEEE HEEEEE.

Ever deal with a Necky Amoruk? It is a plastic double, short and squat and
very heavy. Well, at the Thetis Island symposium, Mercia Sixta always
stages some kayaking accident from the previous season as one of her
"scenarios". When you sign up for her scenario class, all you know is two
things: (1) wherever she says you are going to paddle to, you will never get
there; (2) you are about to get very wet. My group started to paddle to an
island about a quarter mile out, when we came upon a yellow Amoruk
completely awash. Both paddlers were swimming, sorta. The hatch covers were
missing. The boat was completely swamped with no flotation.

We proceeded to sort out the mess, managed to get the paddlers out of the
water and laying on our bows, while a couple other boats went after the
Necky. They did manage to get it drained by doing an H rescue, and very
slowly forcing the hull up and out. When we got done, Mercia came over to
debrief us. Seems the year before, this had really happend in English Bay
(Vancouver). Nice day, windy, two beginners; she lived, he died of exposure.
Our time to get "he" out of the water inour simulation was longer than it
had been in the real rescue.

Lesson learned. In fact, a couple lessons learned. About flotation in a
hull. About hatch covers. About getting the victim out of the water as fast
as you can. About how to organize a rescue.
