When I do them by hand, I have a 1'1/2" gouge I got at an old old hardware
store in Seattle. Also, there is an outfit I think in Friday Harbor that
makes knives; they have a one-handed eliptical blade that could be pulled
rather than pushed to cut that scoop.
For those with electricity, the front roller of a belt sander works pretty
cool....
