Responding to the issue of instability and how to cure it. . .
 Lead is the way to go: If this doesn't help, and the kayak still
tips-over, the boat could likely flood and sink to the bottom, whereupon the
instability will no longer be a problem. Another method would be to use
water, which has neutral buoyancy, and can be emptied on the beach after use
(instead of having to carry it up to the car each time). I've used both
methods, and much prefer the insurance of return as well as the freshwater
apres-paddle sip. Either way, I eventually tired of carrying the weight,
and slowly weaned myself off the ballast altogether.
