Harvey,

various people have mentioned that the St Petersberg museum baidarka MAE
593-76 requires quite a bit of ballast. I suspect that people who were
ballasting their replicas two years ago would be far more comfortable in
them now. Did you ever need ballast in your replica of this kayak? How does
it feel now?

I ask because I am interested in this kayak, either as a polyester-over-WRC
skin boat or as a Paulownia strip-built kayak. Unfortunately, my garage is
too small for a full-length version, so it'll have to be scaled down in
length to fit and up in width to maintain volume, probably 5% for both
scalings.

For comparison, my Shearwater Baidarka (stitch and glue ply, similar to the
Lowie Museum baidarka in shape) is unbelievably stable for its 21" width - I
can just stand up in it, without any need to scull.

too. I have recorded short bursts up to 11.5 knots (21.2 km/h), so far, and
that's without the sail. Good ol' Cap'n Cook was right.

Andrew
