I suspect that I am the offender Wayne was railing about, since I forgot to
trim the quoted message in my last reply. I use Outlook 98 as my mailer, and
it is set up to quote everything by default. Normally, I delete everything I
don't want to appear.

I don't think there is any single mechanism that can prevent the archives
from being filled with rubbish; however, it is possible in Outlook 98, and
possibly also in Outlook Express, to disable automatic quoting of the entire
text, though if that is done, there is no way I know of to selectively quote
except by cutting and pasting between the original message and the reply. To
disable automatic quoting in Outlook 98, select Options from the Tools menu,
click E-mail Options in the Preferences tab, and select "Do not include
original message" in the When replying to a message box. It is possible that
Outlook Express has a similar setting.

Sometimes when people reply without quoting, I don't know what they are
replying to. Obviously, there is a fine line between quoting too little and
quoting too much, but it is not always obvious where that line is.

I am only now aware that this happens invariably while using >Outloiok
express, not then a will but just an automatism, as stupid as it may. I
regret the features of easily snipping and >quoting<that I had in Netscape
are not there anymore (or are they ??).

How can we improve this mess. Any protective automatism can stop the
archives being filled with rubbish ??
