I would venture, and I was going to offer this to Peter's comments above
before Doug's comments reinforced my opionion, that probably the single
biggest effect of flex is stress absorbtion.

I build some flex into all of the paddles that I make. How much, and where
to put it, is a factor of experience. It makes the paddle lighter, more
balanced, and reduces stress on the muscles.

By absorbing stress, one can build a structure that is significantly lighter
than a rigid structure. One can also think of the word resilience as being
applicable.
