Not to mention that the most efficient systems are not always the
least energy consuming. Consider heat pumps (refrigerators,
air conditioners). They operate most efficiently when the temperature
differential between the hot and cold sides is greatest. This is also
the point where they consume the most energy. Turning the thing
down saves energy even as it works less efficiently.

If Euro paddles with the areas of Greenland paddles were in common
use, I think that folks would feel similarly about them. In fact, the
Current Designs Sabella is one of the few that is in that range (that
I've used) at 84 sq. in. This paddle is very popular with those that
have tried it. It's a lovely paddle for long easy trips - rather like a
Greenland style it would seem.

Most Euro paddles are over 100 sq in in area. The storm paddle I finally
finished tonight (yay!) has an area of about 80 sq. in. This, not magic
or aspect ratios, is where the difference lies IMNSHO.
