I built one baidarka with 5/8" tubing ribs which I think was polyethylene. Got it
at HD in a continuous coil. On the first try I just set them in and let the keelsen
push them down and flatten out, but over a little bit of time they reverted to their
rounding ways. The boat is twitchy enough without that. On my second try using the
same ribs I put them in the steam box. I was really excited because it seemed to
work. I flattened them out and as they cooled they seemed to have stayed flat. But,
as time went by, a couple of days, they rounded out again, not totally though. I
decided to let it be and I skinned the boat. The boat did reasonably well, used it
for quite awhile. Since the gun'l mortises were 3/8", I just cut a small slot out of
the tubing end and forced them in. I feel that if I got the tubing hotter it would
have worked better.......... bk
