Hi everyone,
Many thanks for your collective input over the last week. I have a much better idea about how I want to proceed with my first attempt at building a
kayak. Thanks to Peter, James, George, Bill, Douglas, and Kirk especially.
Having seen boats built by George, Bill, and Kirk I see that this is not a hard problem. However, I suspect the SOF method has its share of pitfalls
masked by its simplicity.
I think I'll try the Dyson aluminum tubing frame first since I have better metal working skills at this point. I worried about the corrosion problem at
first, but using an Aludine treatment of the tubing surface should keep the effects of salt water to a minimum along with a fresh water rinse after
paddling.
Two other questions remain: skin finish and seats.
The polyester cloth seems to be bombproof, but somewhat rough. What is the preferred coating to give it a smoother surface to the water? And can the
coating be colored? Gray seems like a poor choice to be easily see. (yes, I know, yellow is not traditional)
Mark mentioned a Feathercraft seat today, but I don't see it listed on their web site. Any other homemade ideas that seem to work well?
Thanks again,
