You might try rubbing some oil into the (unbroken) ribs--they could have
dried out too much. Get some Hubberd's shoe grease (pine tar and
beeswax) and rub it in. Or take the boat out in saltwater repeatedly to
let it absorb moisture and salt. Either way should restore some
resilience.

I broke several ribs right where I sat, and one that my feet pushed when
I was wedging my way into the boat. Likely that is what happened here.
  I added three extra ribs to my boat, right at the seat; hopefully that
will stop future breakages.
