For that neck of the woods, long leaf yellow pine is mighty fine stuff if
you can get it. I understand it's a bit scarce at times. Black spruce is
very tough and would work in a pinch. White pine will do but increase your
dimensions a bit. Ash is strong enough but oil it well. Use what you can
easily get and afford.
