Juan,

I have a wooden kayak paddle with a 90 degree feather. The two halves are
joined by a long, glued scarf joint across the shaft/loom. It is 15 to 20
years old, and was made in Italy.

Long scarfs can seem intimidating at first, but can easily be made with a
sled jig on a tablesaw or band saw. They are also easy if you have access
to a large, stationary belt sander. Glue the joint before you round the
shaft and it will be practically invisible.

> . . .I have been thinking about the problem of carving a paddle with
feathered blades. There are other paddle styles that have oval shaped
blades, some with and without feathering, that I thought about trying.

It would be easy to carve the blades and say half of the loom, but putting
them together in a strong an reliable way would be a trick. I had the
thought to carve the paddle normally then steam bend/twist the loom to
achieve the 90 degree feather: One piece, the grain would be correct for
each side of the paddle, and no need for laminating.
