I have been considering using hinges to connect sections and give the
possibility to stretch the skin. Consider a beam in 4 pieces, giving fixing
points at the stem and stern, midships and two other places. At the other
places (there must be a better way to describe them) there are hinges placed
on the inner side of the beam. These allow the section to folded in half
when packing. On the outer side is a backing plate, fixed to one section and
bolted to the other.
In the center there is only a backing plate with a fixed bolts and wing nuts
to lock it in place.
The ends are assembled and placed in the skin but the backing plates are not
bolted. The center is bought together and pushed out and the center backing
plate is done up. The other backing plates are then tightened.
If the plywood section is stiffened with backing plates it may not be
necessary to join the PVC pipe.
The boat I am looking at building has a large open cockpit, so this may not
be applicable to you.
I hope this description is clear enough to give the idea.
