Well, I haven't figured out how to make steam yet, so I have a little time
and a bunch of 1 1/2 wide 1/8th strips I can rip. So I'll go ahead and put
hardwood on the bottom. I agree that the putting hardwood on the top is
probably a waste of effort, but since you mentioned wear and tear, I'll run
a cap strip on the center 3rd of the gun' ales on the top.

Drilling holes out of the centers sounds interesting, I might do that as
well. :)

As far as making steam to bend the ribs If I built a steam generator from
scratch it would cost around $50 or more, Plumbing pipe is expensive. :(
There is a swap meet every weekend, were folks sell their stuff, I'll check
it out for hot plates teapots, electric pressure cookers, etc. any
recommendations for what I should look for??
