I am going to chime in and cast my ballot for mahogany
gunwales.....very rot resistant, nice to sculpt, and light.
Tough to find in lengths though. Gettting sustainably grown stock is
also problematic.
I have used some nice butternut for deck beams but know little of its
rot resistance. Just like the look and feel of the stuff.
