I should also add that I shape my paddles from Cherry, which is a hardwood.
Which is why I use a 24 grit disc. Cedar, being considerably softer, shapes
very, very fast, by grinder. For beginners, I would recommend a finer grit
for shaping, probably a 50, or even and 80. One nice thing about this
method for shaping paddles is that it allows a great deal of sophisticated
shaping to be done, you are not locked into what specific cutters will
allow.

As Skip has noted, its not a particularily pleasant way to work, but in my
case, time is money. If I earned my living by a different means,
paddlemaking would be a pleasant pastime, and other means of production
would then be appealing. When you do as many paddles as I have, slower
ways, sadly, get more than a little boring and tedious.
