Basically, what you need to start is an at least partially folding frame. It doesn't matter if it is 100% complete; you just should be able to get it out of an enclosing skin, and its waterlines should be acceptable and finished. If there is any problem with the folding mechanism after the skin is on, then you have no option but to break or cut parts...
